thefxc Keyboard-heavy art rock from the great, perennially underappreciated state of Kansas, one foot in prog, one foot in the garage, all of it forward-looking. Unpredictable arrangements on skillful recordings; even the live tracks sound great despite these tapes having probably been sitting in an attic for 40 years. Favorite track: No Laughing Matter (Cowper).

This Bandcamp page includes most of the songs Dr. Doom wrote and performed. In addition to the 3 studio recordings, live recordings from their 1st and last gigs as well 2 track recordings from songwriting & practice sessions have been added. Apologies for the weird quality of the Duerksen tapes, a board mix from hell but made usable through modern technology.

The Whole Story:

Greg Cowper and Jim Skeel met through a mutual friend who had just moved in next door to Greg. Both were interested in music and had recently purchased the 1st edition of "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock" and spent much of their time together discussing their favorite bands. Greg had signed on with the hard rock cover band, Medusa as their sound man. Jim was attempting to create electronic music with Steve Seadeek after purchase of a Mini Korg synthesizer and a Teac 4 channel tape deck.

During a discussion of their favorite bands, Greg and Jim decided "we could do this"! They asked Steve to Join them. Greg had played accordion as a kid, Jim had self taught himself piano and organ and Steve had played electric guitar in high school. Greg and Steve still had their instruments. For a drummer they looked to Medusa's bass player, Steve White. He had recently bought a drum set and was teaching himself to play so he was perfect for these misfits. Dr. Doom and the Victims of Circumstance was born.

The band took about a year to write enough songs for a show and gather the equipment necessary for the sound they were trying to create. They had their first performance on April Fools Day 1980 at the Foundry West Bar. They had invited all their friends from work and play and the band set the weird record of the most soft drink sales sold in one night for the bar.

Live performances were sporadic as Greg and Steve W were very busy with Medusa and by that time Steve S had signed on as the Medusa light guy. Jim had been asked to play keys in the hard rock cover band Roenarc by then but Greg and Jim still considered Dr. Doom as their primary interest. After a show at Duerksen Hall, Steve White decided he had enough of lugging equipment around and not making any money. He told them that was his last gig. Steve Seadeek also decided to call it quits.

With the demise of Dr. Doom, Greg and Jim found new friends in the punk/new wave scene in Wichita and formed the Buckthrusters with Staci Stull from "The Inevitable" and Brit and Jim Rossencutter from the Agarns after these bands broke up.

about

Dr. Doom and the Victims of Circumstance Wichita, Kansas

In 1979 Dr. Doom was formed by 4 friends who wanted to try their hand at writing, performing and recording original music. 3 had not picked up an instrument since high school and 1 was attempting to learn a new instrument. The results were somewhat surprising. Alas, the band broke up shortly after the start of recording of their many songs. This is a document of what was. ... more
